JOB SUMMARY: Working within a dynamic Curatorial team and in collaboration with the David C. Copley Director & CEO, the Assistant Curator supports the need of the department's overall schedule with a particular focus on tending to the Museum's long standing commitment to the field of Latino/a/x art and artists. This position assists with a variety of programmatic and administrative tasks related to exhibitions, collections and programmatic activities. The Assistant Curator contributes to current scholarship on Latino/a/x art and artists through research and writing to accompany MCASD exhibitions and builds awareness of the MCASD collection for diverse audiences, including scholars, the Latino/a/x public, and the general public. Support mission and vision of Museum throughout performance of duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 
  • Assist department in efforts related to exhibition programming and the collection’s care, research, and conservation.
  • Undertake original research on the collection and special exhibitions.
  • Organize original exhibitions of varying size and scope, depending on experience and Museum needs with a particular focus on art by artists who identify as Latino/a/x.
  • Conduct research and prepare materials on proposed loans and acquisitions.
  • Propose recommendations for the strategic incorporation of Latino/a/x art into the Museum’s collection.
  • Steward the Museum’s collecting circle to deepen the holdings of Latino/a/x artists in the collection.
  • Participate in quarterly meetings of the Museum’s Collections Committee.
  • Contribute curatorial text and content to meet a broad range of Museum applications, including educational, press, digital and social media, and advancement purposes.
  • Oversee coordination of exhibition didactics for assigned projects.
  • Work across departments to coordinate logistics for exhibitions and publications, including installation, promotion, fundraising, education, and public programming.
  • Lead a cross-departmental working group that will position, amplify, and further entrench the Museum’s commitment to advancing Latino/a/x art.
  • Draft and initiate correspondence and coordinate information for department and CEO as necessary.
  • Coordinate logistical needs for visiting artists and special guests, including arranging honoraria, travel, and lodging as needed.
  • Develop and coordinate programming to support Programs and Interpretation and Education & Engagement staff.
  • Keep aware of trends in Latino/a/x art, acquainted with peers, artists, and scholars in the field.
  • Assist with budgeting, planning, and implementing internally generated exhibitions as needed.
  • Work alternate, part-time, or special event shifts, including weekends and/or after regular business hours as needed.
  • Perform routine office and administrative tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE: Refined oral and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and Museum constituents, such as trustees, donors, and visitors. Outstanding organizational and administrative skills with an ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects and in a fast-paced work environment. Strong technical skills and proficiency in MS Office. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and motivate and work well with artists, colleagues, trustees, and visitors. Ability to conduct independent scholarly research. Bachelor’s degree and three years recent, relevant experience with a thorough knowledge of modern and contemporary art or any equivalent education and experience. Specialty in Latino/a/x art required. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
